    Description

The Kentia Palm is tall, stunning, and elegant. With slender, graceful fronds, she has been a popular option since the Victorian era, when explorers began exporting the seeds from Howe Island, off the coast of Australia. The Victorians loved to put Kentias in their parlors to look fancy, and a big Kentia can class up your place too (even if you don’t have a parlor).

The Kentia palm can tolerate low-light environments as well as low humidity, unlike other palms! The Kentias are slightly drought tolerant, so she’ll forgive you if you miss a watering. On the flip side, she really hates soil that’s too moist, so be wary of overwatering. (If you do overwater, the leaves will start turning yellow—meaning, slow down on the watering!) A relatively slow-growing houseplant, this plant will reach 10 feet tall over time if given the right care!

    Care

Do kentia palms like sun or shade?

Some palms thrive in full sun, but not Kentia. She’s a bit shy and prefers bright indirect light or partial shade. If you want to make a big statement, there are plenty of places to put a Kentia indoors.

Can a Kentia palm survive in low light?

Yes, Kentia is just fine in low light. Not locked-in-a-cabinet shade, but she doesn’t need to be right by the window. She does prefer a filtered window, but she’s flexible. It’s really easy to find a spot for her inside.

Why you should get a Kentia palm

A Kentia palm offers a lot of benefits. She’s beautiful, so she brightens up the room. She’s huge, so she makes a grand statement. She has tons of leaves, so she purifies the air like nobody’s business.

How often should I water a Kentia palm?

Water your Kentia every 3 weeks ish, when the first 3-4 inches of the soil are very dry across a few spots. But Kentia will forgive you if you forget to water her a couple times. Go enjoy your weekend.

Can you overwater a Kentia palm?

You can absolutely overwater a Kentia, with dire consequences. She’s prone to root rot, a terrible condition in which, well, her roots rot. Use a well-draining soil, and wait for the top 3-4 inches of soil to dry out.

Is Kentia good for a bathroom?

Kentia palms can survive up to 100 degrees, which is impressive even for a palm. If you like hot showers, she’ll be ok. However, she’s only ok with moderate humidity, so it had better be a quick hot shower.

    Are Kentia palms low maintenance?

Kentias are easy care for sure. She’s drought tolerant, and she thrives in average indoor conditions for temperatures, humidity, and lighting. Fertilize only twice a year (spring and summer). She rarely needs pruning or repotting. She’s easygoing!

    Pet-friendly

Is the Kentia palm toxic to dogs and cats?

Kentia palms are perfectly safe for dogs, cats, horses, children, parakeets, iguanas, and the California red-legged frog. (In case you needed to know.) They’re nontoxic whether your critters are sniffing, licking, or snuggling with them—or getting even more curious.

    Factoids

    Are Kentia palms fast-growing?

Kentia palms are actually pretty slow-growing, as palms go. She grows about 1-2 feet per year and can reach up to 10 feet tall indoors if you’re patient. Our Kentia palms are already that big, so no need to wait!

How big do Kentia palm trees get?

Some of our Kentia palms are 10 feet tall! That’s about the indoor max (thanks a lot, ceilings), but she can reach 40 or more feet outside. (She prefers to be inside, though—she likes your company.)

What is the lifespan of a Kentia palm?

Indoor Kentia palms can live 20-25 years with proper care (bright indirect lighting, well-draining soil, moderate humidity and temps, and a lullaby every night). That’s a long life for an indoor plant—perfect practice if you have commitment issues.
